Podcast #1

The first podcasting experience was definitely interesting. Ashley, Brandi and I all met to film our projects. I did not expect that we would have difficulty with the equipment, and fortunately, we did not. The most frustrating parts were figuring out the lighting and figuring out how to be on-camera. I, especially, struggled with writing for the project and communicating what I wanted while being filmed.

Once the filming was done, I was completely intimidated by the idea of editing. It turned out not to be as inconceivable as expected. It was, however, extremely time-consuming and requiring an attention to detail that I really do not possess. Further, issues with the external hard drives have made this more confusing and frustrating than surely was ever the intention. I borrowed a hard drive that had been formatted for a PC. I discovered this in class. Then, I went ahead and saved my completed podcast to Ashley's hard drive. Sadly, her drive died. Add to that the stress of studying for comprehensive exams, and it makes for a not-so-enjoyable experience.

I am optimistic that the next podcast will proceed much more smoothly. Soon, the technology problems will be figured out and the fear of the unknown will be replaced with confidence of the not-quite-novice.

I thought you did a good job on your first podcast. The sound was very clear and you were easy to understand. I especially enjoyed the pictures that were on screen while you told us a little bit about yourself. I also enjoyed the transitions, it made the podcast easy to follow. There were a couple times, however, that the purple writing was a little hard to read on the black background. When you changed to the white outline around the writing it became easier to read. There were a couple times the pauses may have lasted a little too long, but it did not mess with the flow too much. Your final project sounds interesting, I am interested to hear what you find. Overall you did a great job. It was a lot of fun to watch and I am looking forward to the next two.

I must say I was impressed with your podcast. You covered all the main topics to be included in the podcast and did so in an easy flowing style. I liked the way you used your B-roll.Your voice was clear and it was easy to follow what you were saying. The lighting and close-up were really good. I agree with Brandon; the purple font on the black background was a bit hard to read. There was a typo at the end where you said "thanks for watchng". The transitions were very good and flowed well. Overall, I enjoyed watching this podcast and I think you did a fine job. I look forward to watching your next podcasts and learning more about ethnic oriented media usage.

Jannibah, I really enjoyed all of the photos you provided while talking about your background and hobbies. These pictures added a lot of interest to your podcast. And you were able to sync the photo with what you were saying, which I know can be difficult. I also like the transitions you used between each of your photos. It really helped the flow of the podcast.

You spoke clearly and in a conversational tone. You also did not use a lot of extras, like um’s and uh’s. So, I could tell you were familiar with what you were going to say. You also made each section clear by providing title pages.

I do have a couple suggestions for your next podcast. First, I would suggest changing the color of the font for your title pages from purple to something lighter, like white or yellow. This would make the text easier to read. On the last few title slides, you did make the area around the letters white, which made the text easier to read. I would also suggest using a font without a lot of thin strokes. You might consider using Arial as your font next time. Using a font without thin strokes makes reverse type (dark background and light words) easier to read.

I would also recommend removing the Ken Burn’s effect from some of the images and text.

Good job. You did really well despite all of your technical difficulties. I look forward to hearing about your project in your future podcasts.
